Carlos Queiroz picked his assistant coaches. No big news. As in the past, he surrounds himself with inexperience at the big stage level. Not to say that the new assistant coaches don’t have the potential to be good, but this is the national team. It should not be a laboratory for experiments. The best should be headinig this squad. Time will tell. Let’s keep the faith.

His first assistant coaches is Agostinho Oliveira who was Queiroz’ assistant coach during the ill fathed qualifcation effort for the 1994 world cup. Agostinho de Oliveira has no experience coaching high caliber senior players at the national team level. Agostinho de Oliveira has been around the FPF (Portuguese Football Federation) since 1990. His claim to fortune is the tied to  Queiroz. He was the assistant coach for Queiroz in wining the under-20 world cup in 1991. That’s it!

Jose Guilherme is the  physical education coach. While it is the first time with the national team his credentials are solid. He was FC Porto’s principal coach during the last 3 national championships. No bad situation here.

Fernando Brassard is the goal-keeper coach. He’s the only one that comes from the Scolari team. He had the distinction to coach, without a doubt, the worst goal keeper ever to ware the Portuguese jersey. Ricardo’s attrocious displays of insecurity, hesitation and horrible ball handling are legendary. Ok so he could defend penalty kicks. But that was it. Does this mean Ricardo will come back? God help us. Does this mean Brassard can mess with Ricardo’s replacement mind? Will see.
