An ideal tour to introduce you to the many historic and beautiful sights of Portugal. Easily fitting into a week, you begin in Lisbon, the cosmopolitan and colorful capital. On your journey north, visit the picture postcard towns of Obidos and ocean side Nazare. Then to Fatima, a pilgrimage destination for millions, before arriving in the town of Lousa to stay in a former palace. Visit a Port wine cellar in Porto, the charming town of Ponte de Lima in the far northwest, historic Guimaraes and the university city of Coimbra before returning to Lisbon.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Lisbon

Arrival at Lisbon airport. Meet your driver outside of customs for your private transfer to your hotel. Balance of the day is at leisure or for optional tours (see below) Accommodation at Hotel Vila Gale Opera (4 star) with buffet breakfast.

Day 2 - Lisbon

Morning sightseeing tour to introduce you to this wonderful city whose history began with a Phoenician settlement in 1200 BC. Today’s Lisbon is a blend of the old and the new reflected in its colorful neighborhoods. Visit the old Moorish section of the Alfama, the trendy Baixa district with its shops and restaurants, the castle of Sao Jorge, high above the city. Then to Belem and the Monastery of Jeronimos, a fine example of Portuguese Gothic architecture known as Manueline. The afternoon is free to explore the city on your own or for an optional tour to Sintra and the Estoril Coast.

Day 3 - Lisbon - Obidos - Nazare - Batalha - Fatima - Lousa

Depart Lisbon this morning for the medieval town of Obidos, a picture postcard perfect walled village of whitewashed houses, red tiled roofs and abundant flowers. Then to Nazare, a colorful fishing village with a beautiful and popular beach. Continue to the 14th C Monastery of Batalha, one of Portugal’s wonders (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and a masterpiece of the Manueline architecture. Inside is the tomb of Prince Henry the Navigator under whose sponsorship, Portugal’s ships set out on their 15th Century discoveries around the world. A visit to Fatima is next, one of the most famous pilgrimage places in the world, drawing millions each year. Continue to the small town of Lousa and your hotel for the night, Palacio da Lousa Boutique Hotel (4 stars). Dinner and buffet breakfast included.

Day 4 - Lousa - Porto

Depart this morning for Porto, Portugal’s second largest city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tour the city and then cross the Douro River to Vila Nova de Gaia, home of the Port Wine Cellars where you will be hosted for a tour and a wine tasting. Accommodation at Vila Gale Porto (4 stars) with buffet breakfast.

Day 5 - Porto - Ponte de Lima - Braga - Guimaraes

On the banks of the river Lima, crossed by an old Roman bridge, is the charming little town of Ponte de Lima. Here you will find many historical manor houses. Afterward head to Braga, an important religious center with the oldest cathedral in the country and the home of the sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte with its spectacular double Baroque staircase, cascading down a hillside. Continue to Guimaraes, birthplace of the nation under Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques in 1139. The historic town center tour includes a castle with massive, crenellated battlements and the palace of the dukes of Braganca. Dinner included in Guimaraes. Accommodation at Villa Hotel Guimaraes (4 stars) with buffet breakfast.

Day 6 - Guimaraes - Coimbra - Tomar - Lisbon

On the return to Lisbon you will stop for a visit to Coimbra, home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. The twisting medieval streets of the city will take you back in time. Then to Tomar, former home of the Templar Knights and their successors, the Order of Christ before arriving in Lisbon by late afternoon. Accommodation at Hotel Vila Gale Opera (4 stars) with buffet breakfast.

Day 7 - Lisbon

Private car transfer to Lisbon airport. Extend your stay with an optional 2 night tour to the charming cities of the Alentejo, famous for fine wines. Please ask for a quote.
