Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias

On the shores of the picturesque Lagoa das Furnas on São Miguel Island, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias (Chapel of Our Lady of Victories) rises like a scene from a fairytale. Its neo-Gothic architecture and mystical surroundings make it one of the most enchanting landmarks in the Azores. Let’s explore the fascinating history, unique architecture, and practical details about this beautiful chapel.

History

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias begins with a story of devotion and love. In 1882, José do Canto, a wealthy landowner, gardener, and botanist, embarked on this project as a tribute to his wife, Maria Guilhermina Taveira de Brum da Silveira, who was gravely ill. Motivated by his affection for her and his passion for design, José envisioned a chapel that would be an eternal monument to her memory.

Though José started the project, he did not live to see its completion. He passed away in 1898, but not before ensuring that the work would continue. After the chapel was finished, it became the final resting place for both José and Maria Guilhermina. They were buried underneath stained glass windows that depict gospel scenes.

Unlike most churches, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias does not hold regular services and you cannot go inside. It is only possible to view it from the outside. Its timeless atmosphere adds to its charm, as nature slowly takes over the building.

Architecture

The chapel’s neo-Gothic design sets it apart from other religious structures in the Azores. Its slim tower and intricate adornments evoke the architectural grandeur of 19th-century Europe, but with a softer, almost dreamlike quality that blends into the lush environment of Lagoa das Furnas.

Inside, the chapel’s 18 stained glass windows are a highlight. These windows not only add a kaleidoscope of colors to the interior but also reflect the craftsmanship and artistry of the time. The interplay of light and shadow creates a meditative mood as it invites visitors to pause and appreciate the beauty around them.

The chapel is surrounded by meticulously landscaped gardens that are perfectly integrated into the natural scenery. This thoughtful integration of human design with the environment reflects José do Canto’s expertise as a gardener and his desire to create a space of tranquility and reverence.

Visiting the Chapel

To reach the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias, drive about four miles south from the town of Furnas along EN1-1A. Look for a dirt road marked by signs near the lake. The chapel is just a quarter-mile down this path, directly across from Lagoa das Furnas.

For a closer look at the chapel and its surroundings, visitors can purchase tickets to the nearby José do Canto Forest Garden. Admission not only grants access to the chapel and its gardens but also the Salto do Rosal waterfall, the Vale dos Fetos garden, the Casa dos Barcos and the Casa da Lagoa scattered along the winding trails.

When you visit Furnas on the island of São Miguel, don’t miss the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias. Its history and beautiful setting make it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to the Azores.
