Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, located at the mouth of the Tejo (Tagus in English) River - where the Portuguese ships set sail overseas in the 15th and 16th centuries towards East. At that time, the Maritime Discoveries period, the city became the center of a large empire, still visible in the monuments of Belém section. Lisbon is well known for its historic traditional neighborhoods. You'll be amazed with the Chiado, Bairro Alto and Alfama as well as the Castle of Saint George and the gorgeous views from the top of its hill.
Sintra and Estoril Coast
Among the sites you should not miss in Portugal is Sintra, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for the great beauty of its nature and architecture, with fairy tale palaces and lush vegetation. The Cascais and Estoril Coast are places of charm and aristocratic traditions that you'll meet along the Atlantic Ocean and the white sandy beaches and magnificent fortresses from the 17th century.
Coimbra is the city of students because it was here that the first university in Portugal was created in the 13th century. Today it is the oldest and one of the most important universities in the country and in Europe. Be sure to visit the Baroque Library from the 18th century that is one of the highlights of a visit to Coimbra. In its city center you'll wander among Romanesque and Manueline churches at the same time you stroll across its busy commercial area.
Serra da Estrela
Estrela mountain range is one of largest in Portugal, at 1993 m (6,539 feet). This point is not a distinctive mountain summit but it is the highest point in a plateau known as Torre ("Tower" in English). Due to its bizarrely shaped crags, its mountain streams and lakes along with its beautiful forests and views, the area ranks among Portugal's outstanding attractions.
The beautiful Douro Valley is where the terraced hill slopes hide one of the country's most valuable treasures: the beautiful vineyards from where the worldwide famous Port wine is produced. While driving through Marão Mountain range get prepared to enjoy one of the most wonderful landscapes in the world with endless rows of vines clinging to the steep slopes along the banks of the Douro River. We suggest a visit to one of the wineries in the region.
Private River Cruise in the Douro
During this very special included activity you will board a charming boat in one of the little villages along the Douro Valley and a private cruise along the river. Cruise along the gentle waters of the river Douro, while enjoying some local products and some of the superb Port or Douro wines.
Guimaraes is the cradle of Portugal where our first king, Afonso Henriques, was born and where he began the nation. Be sure not to miss a visit to the Ducal Palace, the Castle and walking along the narrow streets of the historic center (World Heritage Site by the UNESCO) until you get to the charming Praça da Oliveira (Oliveira Square).
Porto is both the name of a city and a fortified wine (known as Port in English). Port is one of the most famous wines in the world and is aged at the wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia on the south bank of the Douro River. Porto's historical center has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and it preserves many beautiful monuments, mainly from the Baroque period which reflects the glory and wealth achieved by trade of Port Wine. Be sure not to miss a visit to the Cathedral (Sé), the Church of Saint Francis and the Clérigos Tower.
