Algarve is a region stretching across the southern coast of Portugal. As you travel in the Algarve you’ll notice two distinct areas. In the north, there are myriad orchards and verdant foliage, which create a lively and beautiful landscape. Along the southern coast, golden beaches are separated by red cliffs that form enclaves and grottoes, allowing for an ideal beach-going experience. The temperature is quite fair here: in the summer it ranges from 14°C to 24°C (57°F to 75°F), while in the winter it seldom drops below 12°C (54°F); at times the high in the winter can be positively summerlike. In fact, the Algarve boasts 3,300 hours of sunshine per year, more than almost any other destination in Europe.

The cities of Algarve all have their own personalities and attractions to offer. Faro, the capital of the region, offers many historical sites of interest, including cathedrals and museums. Albufeira, a short trip to the west of Faro, offers an exciting nightlife as well as excellent cuisine and is popular with foreigners and young people. Lagos features superb beaches at walking distance of the city center, vibrant history and a lively nightlife. Sagres, located in the extreme southwest of continental Europe, is forever linked to the nautical school first developed by Prince Henry the Navigator. Silves, dating back to the 8th century during the height of the Moorish period is a must-stop point for those wanting to understand the history of the Algarve. Tavira is a quaint and lovely Algarve fishing village, with great beaches and an attractive downtown.

These are just a few examples of the beautiful and diverse towns of Algarve that offer rich culture, many historical points of interest, and picturesque beaches. Algarve is also a major destination for golf enthusiasts. Some of the best hotels in Portugal are located near Algarve’s fantastic golf courses, and every year golfers from all around the world come to hit the links, which are considered some of the best in Europe.

A scenic countryside, beautiful beaches, historical destinations, excellent golf courses, diverse culture, and a lively nightlife—all within a relatively small region make the Algarve an ideal destination for any vacation. Its variety of attractions and nearly endless summer makes for an experience that appeals to all walks of life and ages.

Visit Algarve

The Algarve is easily reached either by highway from the north or by plane via Faro International Airport.

One of the most popular packages for those not flying direct to the Algarve or driving is the Lisbon and Algarve city break. You spend 3 nights in Lisbon, take the train in first-class comfort, and stay in Algarve for 4 nights, returning to Lisbon again via train. The package includes a full-day historical tour of the Algarve. More tours can be added to make your stay even better, and days can be added or deleted from the itinerary at your request.
